In unincorporated Sumter County, an accessory building of about 100 square feet or smaller is generally permit-exempt when it stays under the height limit, while bigger buildings need a permit. As of spring 2025, Sumter County also handles permitting and inspections inside the City of Bushnell, so for a property in town you work with the county building office too. Some parcels near the city sit inside a joint planning area that can carry added standards. Either way, setbacks, zoning, and any HOA rules still apply, and a building does not need a permit for us to deliver it.
We do not pull the permit for you, but we will tell you which side of the line your property falls on and point you to the right office so you are not guessing. Getting this right up front is a lot cheaper than fixing it after the fact.
